No, you don't need to be in good shape before starting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). The best way to get fit for BJJ is to train BJJ itself. Many beginners start with little to no athletic background and gradually build their conditioning through regular practice. Classes are typically structured to accommodate all fitness levels, and you'll naturally improve your strength, flexibility, and cardio as you train. Everyone progresses at their own pace, so don't let fitness concerns delay your BJJ journey.
Our Tiny's class welcomes children as young as 5 years old to begin their Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu journey. Starting this young helps develop crucial motor skills, body awareness, discipline, and social skills in a fun, supportive environment.
Consistency is key for BJJ progress, and we recommend training 2-3 times weekly. Quality matters as much as quantity—focused sessions where you concentrate on specific concepts and techniques will accelerate your development more than mindless repetition. Regular, intentional practice allows your body to build muscle memory while giving you adequate recovery time. Commit to a sustainable schedule and prioritize understanding the "why" behind movements for optimal improvement.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is highly effective for self-defense. It emphasizes controlling opponents through leverage and technique rather than strength, making it practical for real-world situations. BJJ's ground-fighting focus addresses the reality that many confrontations end on the ground. It teaches you to manage distance, neutralize threats, and escape dangerous positions—all crucial self-defense skills. Additionally, regular training builds the confidence to avoid conflicts when possible and handle them effectively when necessary.
For your first class, we provide introductory gis. Please wear a rash guard or sports shirt with leggings or shorts underneath. Bring flip flops or crocs to wear when entering and leaving the mats, as footwear is not allowed on training surfaces. Remove all jewelry and ensure fingernails and toenails are trimmed short to prevent scratches. A water bottle is recommended. Don't worry about being perfectly prepared—our instructors are accustomed to helping newcomers feel comfortable.
Most students need 1-2 years of consistent training to earn a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. This timeframe varies based on training frequency, prior athletic experience, and individual learning pace. The blue belt represents a solid grasp of fundamental techniques and positions, effective defensive skills, and basic strategy application. Remember that everyone's journey is different—focus on personal improvement rather than comparing your progress to others. Regular attendance and engaged practice are the keys to advancement.
We currently do not offer women-only classes. However, if you're interested in training but feeling nervous, please contact us. We have several women who train regularly at our academy, and we can partner you with them when you start. Our instructors prioritize creating a respectful, inclusive environment where everyone feels comfortable learning. Many of our female students started with similar concerns but quickly found BJJ to be empowering and welcoming.
Our membership fees are structured to accommodate various training needs. Children's memberships range from £38-£65 per month, while adult memberships range from £60-£120 monthly, depending on your chosen program and training frequency. We offer flexible payment options and family discounts for multiple members. All memberships include access to our core curriculum and community events.
Absolutely! We offer trial classes so you can experience our training before committing to membership. You can pay for each trial class as you go, and they're offered at a reduced rate. We allow up to 3 trial classes to give you a proper feel for our academy, the coaching style, and our community before making your decision.
Yes, discipline and respect are woven into every aspect of our training. In our academy, children learn that BJJ is as much about how you train as what you train. They discover the importance of listening to instruction, showing respect to coaches and teammates, controlling their emotions, and taking responsibility for their actions. Our community reinforces these values, and parents consistently tell us they see positive changes in focus, behaviour, and respect at home and school.
Yes, BJJ is perfect for beginners! Our structured Basics Programme assumes no prior experience and builds your skills from the ground up. If you're eligible, we also offer a Beginner 6 Week Programme designed specifically to get you started with the essentials. We focus on teaching proper technique, safety, and fundamental movements before progressing to more advanced training. Our experienced instructors and welcoming community make it easy to start your journey, regardless of your background or fitness level.
Our class sizes vary depending on the programme and time. Tinys classes are capped at 20 students to ensure plenty of individual attention. Juniors classes are capped at 40, with an average attendance of 25-35 students. For adults, our 10am classes typically have 10-20 participants, while evening classes average 25-35 members. We maintain these sizes to balance a vibrant training atmosphere with quality instruction and individual coaching.
Our kids' classes are structured around fun-based warm-ups to get everyone energized, followed by drills focused on the day's topic, and finishing with live situational sparring and games to apply what they've learned. Adult classes follow a similar structure but with more detailed technical instruction in our Basics Programme. Our Fundamentals class includes a warm-up, focused drilling on techniques, line drills, and situational sparring to test your skills in live training scenarios.
Unfortunately, we don't currently have changing facilities or showers available. However, this is something we're actively looking to add in 2026 as part of our academy improvements. In the meantime, most members arrive ready to train or use our bathroom facilities for quick changes.
Yes, we love competition! Our academy regularly attends local tournaments together – we travel as a team and cheer each other on throughout the day. It's an amazing bonding experience and a great way to see your progress. We also host in-house competitions specifically for our students, which are ideal for first-time competitors or anyone wanting to test themselves in a familiar, supportive environment before venturing to external events.
